Carlos Niño Photay International Anthem Recording Company lp vinyl turtle records brussels ixelles belgium

IARC followers should know Niño, or at least one of his 3 albums we’ve released in the last 2 years (Chicago Waves, More Energy Fields, Current, and/or EXTRA PRESENCE). A simple introduction to Photay (née Evan Shornstein) would be to say: he’s made some of the best ‘ambient’ music of the last five years. Yes, “ambient,” in quotes. Nobody knows what that word means at this point, but luckily it doesn’t really matter. Nobody is listening to a marketing director’s idea of a filing system. It’s just a word and not what the word means. What we are listening to is quiet music, the best of which is quite often the most subtly chaotic and free. Multi-rhythmic, expertly constructed, free floating walls of sound. It’s not a new concept, and It’s been explored masterfully by composers from Steve Reich (The Desert Music) to Susumu Yokota (Grinning Cat), but for many it was uncharted listening territory until the start of the 2020 global pandemic. It fit right into the slow drip fried-nerve-cocktail of apartment gardening, antidepressants, and YouTube ASMR, and the tides don’t seem to be receding any time soon. With any new wave, though, there should be an acknowledgment of the continuum and a nod to the Old Masters. The partnership between Shornstein and Niño is just that. Niño’s influence is vast (who comes here with a network of regular collaborators including Iasos and Nate Mercereau), as is the presence of harpist Mikaela Davis, and the result on this collaborative album is to push Photay towards the sounds of the earth. And the water. And the spaces that exist, somewhere, probably. Mysteries unfold around each corner on every listen.

Originally released on Studio !K7 Records in 1998, Peter Kruder and Richard Dorfmeister's groundbreaking release, 'The K&D Sessions' reset the bar for what could be achieved in a compilation. Across an array of original tracks, dubs and infamous ‘K&D Session’ remixes, the DJ and producer duo took the listener on a smoke-filled blunted journey that flowed flawlessly. Often compared to DJ Shadow's 'Endtroducing' for it's similarly deft craft of rhythm and quoted by Allmusic as "the most blissfully blunted music the world has ever heard", the album has sold over 1,000,000 copies to date and was included in Spin’s ‘Top 20 albums of 1999’. The album has long since been deleted on Vinyl with original 4LP sets changing hands for €300+ on the collectors market and even a bootleg vinyl copy will set a buyer back over €100. Sixteen years later, this legendary album will be available as a long overdue 5LP reissue remastered by Bernie Grundman Mastering in Hollywood.
Amon Tobin continued his adventures with the breakbeat on Out From Out Where, his fourth album. Darker, more complex, even more rhythmically driving and intense than ever before, this huge record cemented Tobin’s reputation as one of the most innovative and important names in dance music today.Out From Out Where differed from its predecessor in that Supermodified was made using only found sound (most of them generated by Amon himself) while here he stepped back to utilise some slightly more traditional sources (displaying in particular, a love of guitar licks). But when Tobin takes a sample source he is never happy until he has warped, filtered and fucked with it until it sounds like something straight from his head. And not just anywhere in his head, but that dingy, cobwebbed corner where no one should go…In fact, this remains the most straight-up nasty album that Tobin has made – music with the power to genuinely disturb. Shut the door, close the windows. Be afraid…
